Outlining the process

Hex Vines Vine Maturing Facility

Kleinberg developed the vine maturing concept as an in-house service for their own table grape farm. They realized that growing vines in a dedicated facility would be faster, cost-effective, and more successful than planting them directly in the vineyard. To address these challenges, Kleinberg built a dedicated facility for maturing vines and growing their stems to trellis height. The facility, called Hex Vines, was completed in 2022.

The facility offers vine maturation, saving time, labour, water, and fertilizer inputs.

Traditional establishment (below) of young vines is time-consuming and labour-intensive. The young vines grow at uneven rates and some vines may fail to take root and die. At right, matured vines are planted and trellised at the same time

Maturing the vines (left and below) in the Hex Vines maturing facility before planting them allows for a more efficient and successful establishment of stronger and more uniform vineyards.

The maturing facility shapes the vines according to client specifications, including stem length and splitting of the growth point.

Planting matured vines allows for a small crop in the first year, potentially saving on capital costs.

Maturing vines in the facility enables growers to leave the ground for the new vineyard fallow for a year after removing a vineyard, thus disrupting the life cycle of pests and soil-borne pathogens.

Maturing vines in the facility provides an extra year to evaluate new varieties before planting them in the ground.
